Review: Schizoid

Jul. 11 1:28 PM by iguss

With so many dual joystick shooters on the downloadable market, there is no need for yet another one. Developer Torpex Games recognized this fact and, using XNA tools, created Schizoid, a unique top-down shooter, without the shooting or use of any face buttons.

The objective in Schizoid is to consume the enemy. Your ship can only defeat like color targets, which adds an element of strategy. Co-op is a feature that can sometimes feel like an obvious afterthought, in Schizoid however, playing with someone else is encouraged. Since your ship can only attack enemies of the same color, another ship of a different color is on screen at all times. Both players' goal is to avoid the opposite color while eliminating the same color.

Top Five Ways to Improve Arcade Sales

Jul. 9 6:41 AM by iguss

There are a huge number of great downloadable games available for all three major platforms, but these titles are not as popular as traditional releases. Compared to retail products, there is little buzz for games on the Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and Wii Channel. For example, with more than 12 million 360's sold this generation, it is astonishing how few downloads occur. Sales figures are not readily available, but for example, in the first week of sales, the top selling XBLA rhythm shooter, Rez, had only 25k downloads! Here are a few ideas to enhance the success of downloadable games:

1. Make the purchasing process painless: Microsoft point conversions confuse the consumer and do not have any benefit. Why can't Rock Band songs just be $1.99 instead of 250 points like they are on the PSN? A simple one-to-one conversion is the easiest way for consumers to make a well-informed purchase.

2. More advertising: Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony need to take it upon themselves and advertise downloadable games in magazines, online and television, similar to what we see with AAA releases like Halo, Metal Gear Solid and Super Smash Bros.

Guitar Hero III and Rock Band DLC: Goose and Maverick Would Be Proud

Jul. 1 10:07 AM by coloradojoe1

Free Top Gun Download, Kenny Loggins Not Included - This Friday is the 4th of July, so while you'll be busy enjoying some BBQ and running around with sparklers trying to spell out your name, try and make sure you find some time for a free "Guitar Hero III" download. The Top Gun Anthem, a guitar instrumental used throughout the movie, will be available on July 3rd for you and Goose to rock out to. Who knows, maybe you'll impress a flight instructor.

In Rock Band DLC news The Who 12 Pack, full of classic Who tracks, will be released July 15. Individual songs such as Baba O'Reilly and Behind Blue Eyes can be bought for 160MS points ($1.99) or you can buy the complete set for 1600 points ($19.99). I've always thought the price for downloads were a little steep (I only pay $.99 on iTunes), but with the news that gamers will be able to use their downloadable purchases on Rock Band 2 you'll probably get your money's worth. Read on for more details.
