Review: Double D Dodgeball

Jul. 20 9:44 AM by Ian Guss

Double D Dodgeball, an adaptation of the old schoolyard game, is a one trick pony that does not provide much in the way of variety or options. Gameplay is shallow and not very engaging and will only appeal to those desperate for a dodgeball fix. Double D Dodgeball includes two gameplay types: western and eastern. Western is the standard single elimination format and eastern gives players a second chance. After getting hit, players are moved to the outer border where they can still participate in the action. Each game is extremely short, and with such simple 2D graphics, this title does not correlate to the amount of fun had during school recess.

For a pricey 800 Microsoft points ($10) Double D Dodgeball only offers two modes: exhibition and online play. As a player match option, tournament mode allows users to create a team and challenge other players online. The eight person multiplayer is somewhat enjoyable with a bunch of friends and the inclusion of Vision camera support, but like other XBLA releases, the online community isn't exactly booming.

The graphics are bland and although the title is presented in the 16x9 format, the action does not fill the entire screen.

Overall, Double D Dodgeball should be skipped. Certain gimmicks like skill shots and a variety of arenas do not add enough to warrant a purchase. Later this year, Pirates vs. Ninjas Dodgeball is slated to make its way onto the marketplace and will likely turn out to be a better dodgeball experience.

Pros: First dodgeball game on 360, Attempts to replicate look and feel of classic arcade games

Cons: Bland graphics and gameplay, Few modes available

Fun factor: 2.25 Graphics: 1.75, Sound: 2.5, Controls: 2.75
