E3 2008: Day 1 Almost Done

Jul. 15 6:26 PM by Terry Terrones

This afternoon, after enjoying a free lunch (free lunch?!? free booze?!? what kind of magical place is this?!?) I headed over to the Bethesda booth and got a half hour of hands-on time with Fallout 3. Last year I was blown away by the hour long Todd Howard led walkthrough, now it was time to get a closer look.

I started out leaving Vault 101 and pretty much could do what I wanted. The landscapes looked solid, the controls were smooth and the game just oozed a post apocalyptic vibe, very cool. I fought off some vicious dogs, giant bugs and encountered an optional side mission. Most impressive was the dialogue tree, which makes Mass Effect's tree look like a picture book. Overall the game looks great.

After Bethesda I had some time to kill so I went to one of my favorte places, the showcase pavilion. Its a fanboy's wet dream. Here you can play any game at E3 before its been released. I was short on time so I only tried out Rock Band 2 and the drums for Wii Music, which were surprisingly complex. I'm not a huge PC gamer but what I saw of The Witcher: Enchanted Edition, due out in September looked great.

Next was Ubisoft which featured live gameplay of Rayman: Raving Rabbids TV Party for the Wii, Prince of Persia, and Far Cry 2 (the highlight of their presser). Shaun White had a busy day as he made another quickie appearance to promote his snowboarding game. Much like Nintendo, Ubisoft strongly pimped its lineup of games for non-traditional gamers - girls. Aside from 4 new Petz games, Ubisoft unveiled 5 new Imagine games and a new lineup of sports games for girls called Ener-G. I was hoping to get more info on End War (all they showed was a vid) but the trailer for I Am Alive looked intriguing.

At the Rock Band 2 demo MTV showed off its new drum kit (quieter pads, slot for cymbal add-ons), a new Strat guitar and an impressive song list that includes Bob Dylan and AC/DC. The Ion Drum kit (cough, gasp $300) was also on display. MTV reps said their goal is to have 500 songs available (on disc and DLC combined) by the end of the year.

Capcom was the last official presser of the day with all of it spent with the people making the Lost Planet movie. Producer Avi Arad (Spider-Man, Iron Man, anything associated with Marvel that was turned into a film, etc.) and David "Solid Snake" Hayter were on the stars of the show. For some reason, he didn't use his Snake voice. I tried to catch him afterward to record a message on my cell but he disappeared. Maybe he was hiding in a box or something.

Yeah 300 bucks for the drum kit is alot. You can get a real 5 piece starter kit for that much.

Most impressive was the dialogue tree, which makes Mass Effect's tree look like a picture book.

I hope Bethesda implements their tree a little better. To say Mass Effect was flooded with dialogue would be an understatement. BioWare held my head under water and watched me squirm.

thanks for posting on rock band 2 like i asked. i love the game but $300 for drums- you gotta be kidding me!
