With so many dual joystick shooters on the downloadable market, there is no need for yet another one. Developer Torpex Games recognized this fact and, using XNA tools, created Schizoid, a unique top-down shooter, without the shooting or use of any face buttons.
The objective in Schizoid is to consume the enemy. Your ship can only defeat like color targets, which adds an element of strategy. Co-op is a feature that can sometimes feel like an obvious afterthought, in Schizoid however, playing with someone else is encouraged. Since your ship can only attack enemies of the same color, another ship of a different color is on screen at all times. Both players' goal is to avoid the opposite color while eliminating the same color.
Relying on the computer A.I. is hit or miss but with a competent partner (online or off), this becomes a much easier task. Each level in the game is extremely short, but there are more than 100 with enough variety to keep you busy. If that is not enough, also included is the ultra challenging Uberschizoid. In this mode, you control both ships at the same time, one with each joystick. It is difficult to adjust to this option and forces you to use your brain in ways you never thought were possible.
The difficulty is challenging, as you will find yourself dying multiple times but the controls are responsive. When you run into the wrong color it feels like it is your fault, rather than a design flaw. Schizoid has a slick, artsy look and is simple, yet elegant. This game is addictive and a lot of fun for those seeking a distinctive experience based on traditional top down shooters.
