What do Superman, Zombies and an eagle eye view all have in common? They're key ingredients in "The Last Guy", that's what. The Last Guy, now available on the PlayStation Network, is a top down title which puts gamers in the role of a USF soldier sent to rescue civilians trapped throughout a city. A purple beam from outer space came down and started turning people and things into zombies. That pretty much sums up the story portion for this game, but you wouldn't get this title for the story, you get it for its fun and addicting gameplay.
The gameplay is simple, players run through the city collecting lines of people to take back to the drop zone. All while staying as far away from the zombies as you possibly can. It takes careful planning to put all your ducks in a row so to speak. You have a basic set of controls to accomplish your task. The analog stick will move your character and the buttons and triggers serve as an added option to help you as you traverse the city. The main buttons are X and triangle, which give you a night vision scope to see mass bodies of survivors and allow you to run using up stamina.
The game presentation is hit and miss. The visuals are not very impressive, they are simply Google Map style with sprites thrown about them to show the survivors, the zombies and of course you, the last guy, who has a cape and looks similar to Superman. Upon entering each level you will be given a target amount of survivors to capture within the time limit. Doing so will unlock the next level for you to complete. Each level also hides VIP's, who when collected will unlock secret levels and such for you to enjoy as well. The audio in The Last guy takes a note from other crazy Japanese titles like Katamari Damacy, it combines some very odd dialogue and sounds to make up a great game.
With fun 15 levels to play through, The Last Guy is certainly worth a look. However, the downside is that the game has a very short life span. Once completed which can take anywhere from a day to about weekend depending on your playing level. But its quirky antics and obscure design make it a must play on your PS3.
